IFSP-Wanni is the most important development program in the civil war affected area in the North of Sri Lanka. Its main objectives are to:
– Improve
of food security situation
– Strengthen
of self help capacities
– Implement
of physical rural infrastructure
– Promote peaceful coexistence & reconciliation
The project is implemented by Sewalanka Foundation with the assistance of German Agro Action (Deutsche Welthungerhilfe). The funding agency is the Ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation in Germany. The overall project lifespan is 5 years and is planned in 2 project phases; Phase I is 2003-05 and Phase II is 2005-07.
What is different with IFSP?
The Integrated Food security program is implemented through NGOs and has
the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE) as its main project partners.
The development program, launched in the district of Vavuniya in 2003, has
the objective to contribute to peaceful coexistence and reconciliation and
to achieve food security and rural development through mobilizing communities
in the sustainable use of existing resources.
What is the Wanni-Region?
The name Wanni does not cover an administrative region. It is an expression developed out of the election district in the North of Sri Lanka named Wanni (Mannar, Mulaitivu, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya), after former Tamil king of the 16th century “Pandaran Vannian”, who fell in battle at the Elephant pass during Portugese rule in Sri Lanka. Today the expression of Wanni-Region is mainly used for the entire LTTE-controlled area in Sri Lanka.
What is Sewalanka foundation?
The Sewalanka Foundation was established as a development NGO with a clear
mandate: to address the needs of the most vulnerable communities in the
most neglected and disadvantaged regions of Sri Lanka. Sewalanka Foundation
has developed a strategy that takes communities from the relief aid of a
conflict situation to a long term program of sustainable development.
Having a fruitful cooperation with different partners in Sri Lanka for more
than 30 years, GAA started in 1994 the cooperation with its main local partner
- the Sewalanka Foundation.
What is German Agro Action?
German Agro Action is one of the leading NGOs in Germany. It is a non-profit, non-denominational and politically neutral institution. The organization works under the patronage of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its operations are funded mainly by private donations and grants from the German Government, the European Union, the United Nations and others.
GAA was funded in 1962 as the national committee of the “Freedom from Hunger Campaign’ set up by the United Nations-FAO. It operates in more than 50 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin and South America through independent local partners and offers the support of its own staff in order to contribute to an improvement in the nutrition and income situation of particularly poor population.
